The Perfect Crochet Hot Pad (Free Pattern)

I love to create handmade items that serve a purpose, and this hot pad pattern does just that! Because this project is composed of two layers of cotton, it can serve as a potholder as well. Whether you’re a beginner crocheter or you’ve been crocheting for years, this is the perfect cozy rainy day project.

This pattern assumes the knowledge of several basic crochet stitches. If you're looking for some extra guidance, YouTube is a great place to learn the basics!

Materials

  • 5.0 mm crochet hook

  • 1 skein of cotton yarn: For this pattern I used my personal favorite I Love This Cotton Yarn (Bruschetta).

  • Tapestry Needle

  • Scissors

Abbreviations

  • Chain (Ch)

  • Half Double Crochet (HDC)

  • Double Crochet (DC)

  • Slip Stitch (Slst)

  • Stitches (Sts)

Please note that the type of yarn and crochet hook size may always be interchanged! This is one of my favorite aspects about crochet. You can make anything your own with a little creativity!

Pattern

Side One

To begin, chain 30.

Row 1: Skip the first chain from the hook and half double crochet (HDC) 29. Chain (ch) one. (29 sts total).

Row 2-24: Add half double crochets across the row (29 sts total).

Row 25: Half double crochet across the row, fasten off with a slip stitch and cut the yarn.

Side Two

To begin, chain 30.

Row 1: Skip the first chain from the hook and half double crochet (HDC) 29. Chain (ch) one. (29 sts total).

Row 2-24: Add half double crochets across the row (29 sts total).

Row 25: Half double crochet across the row, fasten off with a slip stitch. Do not cut the yarn, as we will go directly into forming the border.

The Border

To begin forming the border, align both sides of the hot pad evenly. Once aligned, work double crochets around both sides, stitching through each side to join together. Work around the project, and note that three double crochets will be necessary in the top of each corner stitch. Completing three double crochets will prevent the work from bunching and maintain a proper tension.

Optional: Forming a loop on the hot pad makes for easy storage. To add one, simply chain 7-8 times and secure with a double crochet.
